After the first 10-15 years of any thatched roofs life, it will need to be re-ridged. A re-ridge consists of stripping the existing ridge back to the coat underneath and building it back up with new straw. This can be done in one of 2 ways. Firstly, what is known in the trade as a flush ridge, which is a ridge that contuse at the same pitch as the main coat with no step up. Secondly, a block or ornamental ridge which is when an extra layer of straw is fastened to the roof underneath the final coarse. A pattern is then cut into this block coarse of straw.
Both types of ridge are fixed down with hazel that is split and sharpened to length. This holds the straw down tight and is also used to create patters, to the desired effect, in the ridge. All of our ridges are completed with a full wrap-over finish sealing the pinnacle/apex of the roof.
Re ridging is a process where the very top courses of the roof is renewed also knows as the cap. We offer both block ornamental ridges or flush ridges both with a full wrap over finish. Patterns can be discussed with the customer to insure we achieve the best results for you.
